eat lots of carbohydrates, I mean lots of it. An average Nigerian consumed at
least 80% of carbohydrates daily. Below I have put together the most popular
food by consumption in Nigeria.
1. Rice: This
is the most popular food eaten by most Nigerian. No household goes without this
food in a day, at least 80 percent of Nigerians eat rice once a day and 30
percent twice a day. Rice can be prepared in various form but the most common
are white rice and jollof rice. White rice is usually taken with stew, other
forms of rice include fried rice, coconut rice, tuwo, etc
2. Garri/Cassava flakes: As a Nigerian you can never escape this food, some people call it poor man’s food but I tell you rich people can’t get enough of it. There is this saying that the difference between poor and rice man garri is that the former soak and wait for the garri to swell up before taking while the latter take the garri with milk, sugar, coconut and some other fancy stuff without waiting for it to swell up.
Garri as a food is a blessed to Nigeria and has been saving poor
man since inception. Not only is it cheap (you can get it for as low as N10 per
cup) but also easy to prepare; just add water and food is ready, no need to
waste money on gas.
3. Bread: This
is another popular Nigerian food made from flour; it’s also cheap and can be
eaten along with so many things. Beverages, butter, groundnut, fried fish, moi
moi, beans cake, etc are some of the things you can take bread with.
4. Amala/Eba/Akpu/pounded
yam: This food are categorically called swallow. It’s called swallow because
you don’t chew it, you swallow just like when you take medicine. This type of
food is eaten with fingers (some called it fingers food) and is usually taken
with soup such as okra, egusi, vegetables, ewedu, etc
5. Yam: yam is
also popular in Nigeria; the most common type is fried yam. It’s common because
you can buy it on the street and eat to your satisfaction. Other forms of yam
are boiled yam and pounded yam. Boiled yam can be eaten alone or taken with
fried egg.
6. Beans: We
all hate this food while growing up because we believe it makes us purge and
fart, well it’s not far from the truth. Many adult like me still don’t like the
food, what we love is its derivatives such as beans cake and moi-moi which can
be taken with bread and pap. Beans can be taken with bread, rice, corn,
plantain, etc
7. Noodles/Spaghetti:
I know some of you will say these are baby food but it will surprise you that
adult also consume this food. It is popular and very easy to cook. It can be
taken with egg, meat and chicken.
